It's time to share another from the dusty archives of Gary's pictures. This picture was taken I believe in 1962 at the Spring Formal. Who are these guys? I know the guy in the back with the dark rimmed glasses- it's Drew Cary holding his hand up saying, "Draft Me First!"

Dan
Crampton led out DTE's in a song to the ladies. This picture was taken
in 1962. The tone quality wasn't bad as I remember. At least none of the
women got up and left the room during the song
|
This picture I am sure will get a lot of grins. Our leader and past President Tom Dennis with a young lady (I think was Sue Mitchner) at the Spring Formal in 1962. I also think that was Jerry Faloon's date (probably Princess Di's Mother) to the right rear. There is speculation that Tom inherited some genes from Dick Clark and still looks the same today. The person behind Tom I think is Ed Chatham spiking the punch with my date.

TOM AND PAM DENNIS
"Tom's head got "large" enough to accomodate those ears (I'll bet that doesn't surprise any of the brothers) Recent photo at the Second Chance Prom with his Last Chance Wife (me)!!! Tom's response to my questions regarding the young lady in Gary's photo are met with Governor George W. Bush's plea "that happened over 15 years ago." Looking forward to meeting you all." -Pam Dennis |
This
picture was taken in late 1963 just before the holidays. We were entertaining
future Lamda Chi's and their dates at some rustic ski lodge around Big
Rapids. Marshall Carr (Social Chairman) was doing what he did best, leading
a few songs. I think that was Doug Houck behind Marshall. I can't remember
the fellow to Marshall's left, possibly Mike Heckathorn. I think he had
a '62 Corvette and that is why that girl is sitting on his lap. Notice
someone in the right rear of the picture holding up a DTE sign. We changed
to Lamda Chi in the spring of '63. If you know anyone else, let me know.
|
In this picture the girl is still sitting on the guy's lap with the '62 Corvette. It doesn't look like he is enjoying it as much as in the last picture. I think that fellow in the right rear was Bruce Anderson talking in sign language. The fellow on the left I don't know. If you have some input email me.

Back to the Spring Formal 1962... Dr. Beltz and Col. Charles Mount are pictured with their wives. I understand from #1 Punches that both are no longer with us. They were then probably younger then, than we are now. Scary!
|
Back at the party.
Pictured on the left is our past President Tom Dennis with a date. (To
Tom's wife Pam... he was able to get two dates in college and I just
happened to get both of them on film.) I I think back then there was
seven guys to one girl at Ferris which made it a little difficult for
non DTE's to get dates. We never had a problem getting dates, right
guys? Larry P. Manning was yelling, "Where are the cups for beer?"
I don't know if you can see it but he has his DTE pin on with something
hanging off the chain. I can't remember if that meant that he was pinned
or not. Don Lightfoot was just a nice quiet guy, but most likely had
his hand on the girls fanny next to him. ZAX Gary

This picture was
taken in the '62-'63 school season. Gary Linville and Vern Hansen along
with four our five brothers ran for most eligible bachelor. The winner
a Sig Ep. This was at a pre party so that everyone could get courage
to go to the dance. The first gal was Carol Bloomfield. Vern probably
knows the others. ZAX Gary
|
This is Mike Secory at the party. Mike was not responsible for the sign. Do you know who was? ZAX Gary. "They must have spelled Holiday differently back then..."-Todd |
This picture was taken in 1962 at the Spring Formal. I'm sorry I don't know they guy on the left. Possibly Tom Aiken? The guy on the right was Bob Norsworthy. Why these two guys are holding hands, I don't know. Why was Bob's cummerbund so high? Bob was a little older (served time in the service prior to college) and a true leader. His credits were... President of Student Body 61-62, President of the Young Republicans 60-61, President of Student Center 60-61, Speaker of the Student Senate 59-60. Aside from Bob being a nice guy and a fun person to be around he was a great speaker. I remember before I pledged DTE Bob was running for President of the Student Body. We were in the gym and the two candidates (Bob being one) were giving speeches hoping to sway the students in the audience to vote for them. Bob's opponent said something rather derogatory about him. Bob got up to the podium, stood silent for a few seconds and responded, "I feel like a man that has been kicked by a jack ass.... You just have to consider the source!" The audience gave Bob a big applause and a few days later they elected him President of the Student Body. I have used that line a few times over the years and it always gets a good laugh. Trivia: Who did Bob run against and where is he now? I'm glad to hear that Bob will be at the reunion, look forward to seeing him. ZAX Gary.

I think this picture was taken around Christmas in 1962. Seated front row left to right: Jon Swanson (Obnoxious Jon) Bill Manning, Tom Ingles and Gary Culy. This was at our house on (I think) fourth street. Vern liked nice things like doilies on the sofa, china dishes etc.. This kind of worried my mother until she met Vern and then she thought he was all right. The reason for the picture, Vern had cooked a great Christmas dinner for us before we left for the holidays. Vern had a heart attack later that winter and while he was recuperating, made many meals for us. His rent was reasonable, the housing was real clean and he was truly a nice guy.
|
This picture was taken at a winter party in '62 or '63. Pictured with date was Jon Swanson and an unknown in the back side window. (might have been a ghost) This was a 1948 Packard Hurst. It had 18,000 miles on it. Stick shift and they called it a side loader because you could load a casket through the side door. The interior was maroon velvet. The first time I parked the Hurst at our house on fourth street, people were calling to see if our landlord Vern Larson was ok. There were many stories about the Hurst, but the classic was one that happened on a Saturday night. We had a grasser all lined up with about 50 to 60 people out in the boonies. I loaned the Hurst to someone 21 to get kegs of beer. While at the liquor store, one of the Michigan State Police cars happened to drive by as the kegs were being loaded into the Hurst. The officer figured that if he followed the Hurst he would probably find the grasser. So he did for several hours. Finally the guys in the Hurst figured out that the officer wasn't going to give up. The beer was getting warm and they were running out of gas and decided to return the beer to the liquor store. This left a lot of very thirsty people at the grasser. As I recall, I think Larry Manning had a couple of his six packs and was very popular at the party. - ZAX Gary |
Pictured at the Spring Formal in 1961 are left to right: R.S. Cook, Bernie Chapple?, J. Cook, Russ Temple, Fred Gunderson and Hank or Henry Smith -ZAX Gary |
I believe this picture was taken in 1961. Looking at the camera is Phil Lapekas along with some unidentified brothers with our Homecoming Float. I remember going out to the barn and working on it and the long drive to get it to town. I think the guy in the suit and hat was a BluesBrother wanna-be :). I think Dean Towns was the float chairman. ZAX Gary
|
Back the Spring Formal in 1962. Our brother Phil Lapekas with date (I wonder if she looks like that now?). That's Drew Carey in the back with the glasses (Roger Pollack). I talked to Roger and he is feeling pretty good and will be at the reunion. I wonder if he still has the same glasses. The guy on the left is John Schoof, I think. The guy in the center I don't know. ZAX Gary
|
This picture was taken of the house May 22nd, 1966. This was a major move on the part of our members and after hearing Punches' report of its condition, it's disappointing. Maybe during the reunion we could discuss some ways of improving the communication with the younger dudes and maintenance of the house. ZAX Gary

This picture of Jay Murdoch and Tom Dennis was taken at the Spring Formal in 1962. As I mentioned there were seven guys to one girl on campus so it was a good deal for the girls. Lots of girls that couldn't get a date in High School had no problem at Ferris. Of course our two leaders didn't have a problem getting dates. I believe what Jay and Tom were talking about is who there were going to ask out next. Or they could have been comparing notes about the ones they had been out with. ZAX Gary

Marshall Carr is
obviously having a great time in the old Hurst. Who were you with Marshall?
We used to have a sign that we would hang in the window. It said, "Don't
laugh lady, your daughter may be inside", etc... We had some good
times. ZAX Gary

Hi Ken and other old Dudes: Ken, thanks for your e-mail. It was great hearing from you, as it has been learning about the lives of other brothers as we talk back and forth as part of the reunion preparatory process. I will respond to your questions and use this opportunity to bring others up-to-date on what's happened to me over the last 37 years, as I am facing a change in plans. First, in answer to your first question, I lost track of Bob Fischer in the early '70s and have not been able to make any contact. Does anyone else know of his whereabouts? As you probably know, after I graduated in '62, I moved to New York City to attend Graduate School at Columbia University. Upon completion, I started my career in the Metropolitan area. For the past 31 years, I have been at The Brooklyn Hospital Center and Brooklyn Health Network, the last 22 of them serving as President and Chief Executive Officer. We are part of the New York Presbyterian Hospital Healthcare System affiliated with Cornell Weill Medical College and Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. I maintained an affiliation with Columbia School of Public Health where I serve on the faculty in addition to Long Island University. I've done an extensive amount of national and international traveling as part of my work on Healthcare System or Association Boards of Directors (State and National) and state and international insurance companies. Its been a great ride! In answer to your second question about sports, the answer is "yes". While I live in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, I have a farm in Connecticut where I have ample opportunity to enjoy my dog training, bird hunting, fishing and golf sports. It's a lot easier than the hunting trips you and I used to go on when we were in college together. I still have a photo of us in my album after one of our great grouse hunts - with feathers in your hat! In reference to family, you remember Kirk, my Son, who was born in Big Rapids. He is an MBA type working on Wall Street and doing well. By the way, to Jay Murdock (for your information), I told the story in an earlier e-mail about you and Carol caring for Kirk and helping with the blood drive when Joann went back into the hospital. See, we all remember good deeds. Anyway, Kirk survived Jay's attention. In '68, I was blessed with a Daughter. She also works in Manhattan doing advertising design, after receiving her MBA. You remember Joann, of course. We divorced in 1980 and I remarried a gal from Oregon in 1995. Family picture on screen to follow. You will note that I haven't changed at all except by adding 25 lbs. and a lot of surgical parts - hip, heart valve and new coronary artery; it takes a full-scale medical center like my own to keep me going, since I refuse to change life style. Now, the real bad part. In answer to your final question, regrettably, I am not going to make the reunion in spite of my best efforts. A family "command performance" related to my son has redirected by schedule that weekend. It's good news for the family, but nonetheless, I will deeply miss not being with all of you. I attended my 40th Munford High School reunion last year in October in Detroit (my first time back) and enjoyed it enormously. Since we are all getting older and may not be able to make reunions every ten years (for a lot of good reasons - including being alive), they decided to have reunions every five years. Irrespective of when the next DTE Reunion will be, I plan on getting back to Big Rapids in the next year or so at homecoming just to see the school and any of you that are around. A final note to Punches and others who asked some questions on prior e-mails. Yes, I do remember that green Austin Healy; it was winter quarter 1960 - with Beer on West Road with Gretchen Zimmerman. Bet you guys never knew that! I've often wondered if she married that guy she was later pinned to at Michigan State. Oh, so many great memories! In reference to memorabilia, I went into the attic last weekend and opened an old trunk and have the 32nd Annual Homecoming (1960) Say It With Music Journal which includes a great picture of Carole Ferguson, DTE Homecoming candidate, (who, as I recall, was narrowly beat out by Gretchen of Sig Eps). I also have a perfect copy of the October 22nd Ferris Bull Dogs verses St. Norbert College football game roster; also in the trunk was a '58-'59 school bulletin catalog, August 1958. I will forward them on to whomever you suggest, Punches, so long as you promise to return them. If they are of no value or you already have copies, no need to respond. All of you, please keep me involved in the communication loop and let me hear from you. If I owe any additional money, please let me know and I will send it on to you. No refund is necessary. Yours in ZAX, Fred Alley

Here is one picture of me from the college days. Somebody (I think Norsworthy) sent it to me. That's me in the lower right corner. This was the infamous "200 yard race" in my leg (220 yard) of the mile relay. The guy in the white on the left was of no significance, however I think I see Jim Fiztgerald & Mike Secory on the sidelines laughing their butts off. Maybe the 2 Marlboros I had prior to the race didn't help- but I kicked butt for 200 yards. -ZAX Punches.

Update from Gary Newman After I graduated form Ferris (and I did graduate) I got in the car business and worked retail for Story Olds for a year. Then I went to work for Pontiac Motor Division for twelve years. Purchased my own Chevy store in 1978 in beautiful historic Cedarburg Wisconsin. In 1992 I purchased a Oldsmobile dealership and moved it into my facility. I remarried in 1984 to Sharon who was widowed and had two children, I have a daughter Jane who is 32 lives in Ft Lauderdale Florida and teaches school. My son Todd is 29 and works with me at the store, is the one doing all the website for the old dudes. We are a medium size store in a great area and employee about 51 people. No I didn’t want to be a mega dealer. I enjoy my work (am doing less of it) and I travel a lot. My stepdaughter Heather 30, is a nurse a Children's Hospital and just had our first grandchild Jack Henry Newman Nelson! Stepson Chad 26 is a mechanical engineer and is doing very well. We also have a Golden Retriever Molly who is 8 (we got Molly after our last son went to college, the house seemed lonely and Molly changed that). We also have a damn cat name Annie 16. We travel a lot, purchased a condo thirteen years ago in Fish Creek, Wi which is in Door County. We are boaters, last June we went to Canada for ten days and traveled the North Channel. In August we went to Charlevoix and Harbor Springs for a week. I love boating, been known to attend a lot of boat shows all over the county. My wife is a good sport about it. We just purchased a condo in Naples Florida in a area called Pelican Bay. Sharon and I have been going down to Florida for the past ten years. My parents are in Naples and we have a lot of our friends that have places down there. I have purchased all my air fare for trips back and forth next winter. ( My wife can’t believe that I am that organized.) I am excited and looking forward to next winter. The first picture was taken in Monaco last year of Sharon and I ( I dug out the best picture I had) :) The second picture is wife Sharon and our first grandchild Jack Henry taken about five weeks ago. Third picture is Jacks first day at work, he is about five days old.

Like Punches says better now than 60 times next month. I'm very happy now. I've been married to Nancy for over 10 years. Brothers, that's a record for me. Please don't ask about the other ones. We live in Lincoln Park, which if you don't know know, Chicago. It is right on the lake about 1 mile north of the Hancock Building on Michigan Avenue. We haven't any children or pets. I have a boy from another marriage who's on the honor role at Illinois State. He's a good kid. 6'3", about 235, and I'm told, a very aggressive IM football player. Must be his mother's side. Nancy and I are both in the ad business. She's from the agency side but now we both sell ads. I've been with McGraw-Hill since 1978. I sell space for a magazine named Engineering News Record. If you're in the Heavy Construction Market you read it. I love to golf and this year got a 12. I'm also, I'm told a gourmet cook. It's a big and expensive hobby. I'm very excited about this event in Big Rapids. I'll be arriving at the Holiday Inn friday afternoon. I too have gained a healthy figure. I'll loan you some hairas, mine is still hanging on. Are we going to do the Flying Wallendas for Marko's Bride? I don't think we can sing the sweetheart song, besides, guys we do have a tradition to uphold. See you all next month.-ZAX Woody. |
Dinner at Vern's before the Christmas Holdays. (I know that's how you spell it, I saw it on a sign somplace). As you can see we had a great dinner. Granny Dean (right) helped Vern Larson put this meal together. On the left Bruce Anderson, Jon Swanson,Gary Curly,Tom Ingles and Bill Manning. Vern was a great guy, we were fortunate to be able to live there. As Vice President of Citizens Bank, Vern wrote a letter of recommendation to Lamda Chi to help us to go national. Vern wrote: "As I have been connected with the Citizens State Bank for a great number of years, have had the opportunity to observe their behavior, and they have always demonstrated their responsibilities toward charity and civic affairs. Also found this group to be efficient in managing their finances in a business like manner." You can tell from this letter Vern was never in Whalens or did he see the film container. :)-ZAX Gary

Dear
Old Dudes Its been fun reading the Old Dude bios. Over the years I've
bumped into: Tom Westphal at a little restaurant in Gillette, Wyoming,
Seeber at O'Hare, Marshall Carr at the Buffalo airport, Woody on the street
in Chicago, and Willard in Traverse City. I am now looking forward to
more bios and Homecoming. Have spent a career in the automotive paint
and materials business. Sales, Marketing, Business Development with 3M
Company. Ran the Martin Senour Paint Co. (Sherwin Williams subsidiary).
Have lived in Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota and now Chicago and New Buffalo
Michigan, where I played golf, yesterday, with Mike Heckathorn. Two daughters,
from first wife, grew up in Boulder. One is Boulder County Purchasing
Manager and the other is in real estate there. 3 grandsons, one old enough
to ski with us. Very happily married to Laurie for past 22 years. We met
skiing; she is a former ski instructor and we remain avid skiers. We are
both in business for ourselves and are happy old dudes. -Dale Ashcraft
